The 2.8 and 3.1 are the same Block just different Bores. All parts are interchangeable except the pistons. I currently have a 2.8 shalter and have reached 220km more than once. But I find that the 3.1 runs smoother at higher speeds.

Correct, ATF, when warm, expands more than power steering fluid. For emergencies you can use brake fluid but it should be change as soon as possible.
