Hi,

I have a prob with the cooling water level. It gets lower without loosing water under the car.
For the moment the car is at the Pontiac - Chevy dealership; they cause it to a gasket between the engine and the transmission. No big deal qua price of the part ( 15 euro ) but a few hours work to go.
Is someone familiar with this malfunction ?? I suppose they give me a honest explain, but I like to check it.

I'd suspectet a head-gasket to be blown... You'll find some
white deposits on the oil filler cap in that case.
Sounds kinda strange to me but, huh, maybe i'm wrong!

This is what my repair manual says on 'Loss of coolant':

* Leaking radiator (well you should see that):
Inspect that thing..

* Radiator cap faulty (hmm makes no sense to me):
There's a pressure test for the cap. Give note if you wanna know about it.

* Distorted radiator filler neck (see above):
If upper sealing area distorted, use wood block&mallet to reform the neck to fit radiator cap. Do pressure test.

* Leaking coolant recovery reservoir or hose
Relace

* Loose or damaged radiator or heater hose connection
Reseat hoses, change hoses or clamps

* Coolant pump seal leaking
Replace pump

* Coolant pump gasked leaking
Replace gasket

* Improper cylinder head torque
Replace and re-tighten cylinder head bolts according to specs.

* Leaking Intake Manifold/Cylinder Head Gasket/Cylinder Block Plug/Heater Core/Heat Water Valve (if equipped):
Repair or replace as necessary.

Isnt' really helpful, is it. Most of those things can be excluded anyway if you don't have a huge puddle of coolant under the car the next day. But if it's disappearing sneakingly without any trace underneath the car, its most probably burnt..
Did you check the cap for that white dirt 89gta mentioned?

Thanks for your 'fault-finding-list'. I have to mention there wasn't something to see at the filler cap and I let the car have a check at the Pontiac dealer in the neighbourhood. The car will be ready at wednesday, so let's see what result will come ... .

Hi Xavier,
did you fix it, found wat it was?
as far as I know there is no gasket between engine and transmission at all.
only thing there are freeze plugs. If one of the plugs is rusted and leaking you should find some coolant anyway.
something else comen is a defective heater.....

Yep, the problem has been solved: the freeze plugs has been newed and the problem did stop. Where the coolant ran out is still the open point... ??

I drive over 2000 km yet and the level stays OK ! :]
